The city of Sassi

City of caves and stones, Matera (European Capital of Culture 2019) is a jewel carved into the rock, or rather between two rocks: Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, divided in the center by the Civita hill. Once the heart of rural civilization, today the stones come to life and leave tourists from all over the world breathless, especially in the evening, when the lights transform them into a papier-mâché nativity scene. Matera, with its enchanting scenery and unique architectural works, has fascinated many artists, including Carlo Levi and Giovanni Pascoli.
